California

April 10, 2026 by sr22

In California, an SR‑22 (also called a California Insurance Proof Certificate or SR‑1P) is required when a driver’s privilege has been suspended for up to four years due to driving without proper liability coverage. To restore the license during the last three years of the suspension, the driver must provide an SR‑22 and keep it on file for the remainder of the suspension period.

The filing is normally handled by the driver’s insurance company, which must electronically report the SR‑22 to the DMV as required by California Vehicle Code §16058. If the DMV does not receive the proof, the driver can submit the certificate themselves using the online service, email, kiosks, mail, or an automated phone system. A $14 reinstatement fee must be paid when submitting proof of insurance, and the insurance card must clearly show “California” to be valid. Once the SR‑22 is on file and the fee is paid, the driver’s license can be reinstated.
