Washington

April 10, 2026 by sr22

In Washington, an SR‑22 (called proof of financial responsibility) is required to demonstrate that a driver can cover damages they may cause while driving. The state mandates this filing for individuals who have been convicted of, or forfeited bail for, certain offenses, failed to pay civil judgments related to accidents, or have driven or owned a vehicle involved in an accident. Acceptable proof includes an SR‑22 certificate filed by an approved insurance company, a $60,000 certificate of deposit issued by the DOL, or a $60,000 liability bond from an authorized surety.

To file an SR‑22, the driver’s insurance provider can submit the certificate through the Washington DOL’s online portal or by fax to 360‑570‑7825. After the DOL receives the documents, processing typically takes 7‑10 business days. Drivers must maintain proof of financial responsibility for three years from the date they become eligible to reinstate their license. Reinstatement of a suspended license is completed through the License Express system, where drivers pay any reinstatement fees, satisfy other suspension conditions, and ensure the SR‑22 is on file for the required period.
