In Arizona, an SR‑22 (also called Future Financial Responsibility) is proof that a driver maintains the state‑required minimum liability insurance. It is required when a driver is convicted of certain serious traffic violations—such as DUI, implied‑consent refusals, insurance law violations, or failure to maintain coverage on a vehicle they own or lease. The insurer files the SR‑22 electronically with the Motor Vehicle Division, or a driver may opt to deposit $40,000 with the State Treasurer as an alternative.
If the SR‑22 coverage lapses, the driver’s license may be suspended until proof is re‑established. The driver must obtain new SR‑22 coverage (or the cash deposit) and pay a $10 suspension fee online or at an MVD office. The SR‑22 must be maintained for three years from the suspension date, except for judgment suspensions which may have different timeframes. After the required period, the MVD automatically removes the SR‑22 requirement; no further action is needed unless the driver is no longer a state resident.
